So Harmonix just announced their first list of Downloadable albums for Rock Band, and while the first one is kind of Meh, the second is great, and the third is HOLY SHIT!
Album 1, later this month, I think, is Judas Priests' "Screaming For Vengeance". Meh, the only song I'll get is You've Got Another Thing Coming. I hope they cherry pick other Priest songs, I just never liked this album. Breaking the Law would be cool.
Album 2 is The Cars' self titled album. Song off of this include: Bye Bye Love, Moving in Stereo,You're all I've got Tonight,Just What I Needed, Best Friends Girl, Good Times Roll
Actually putting that together just made me realize how great that Cars Album is going to be.
The last one is Doolittle by The Pixies! I am psyched because a couple of my favorite songs are going to be in this set: Debaser! Here Comes Your Man! Monkey Gone to Heaven.
Still no announcement on Nirvana's Nevermind, which is what EVERYBODY is waiting for.
This is a seriously fun fucking game.
I'm worried that I am inviting too many people to come and play, and that because of that, not everyone is getting a chance to fart around with different instruments.
Also there is a progression in the game that can be intimidating.
Some things I have noticed over the past couple of months:
I usually didn't notice a significant age gap between me and most of my friends until I started playing this game. Maybe it was the way I was raised, but I used to read Rolling Stone when I was younger, and I would have to absorb a larger spectrum of music. When I was in Jr High, half of my friends split off and became "Stoners". They liked Heavy Metal (That's what it was called back then), so I listened to that, my personal preference was older punk, and the newer "Surf Punk" (Butthole Surfers, the Vandals, Black Flag, the Clash). I didn't have any friends who listened to that, so I kept it mostly to myself. My other friends listened to "New Wave", which really wasn't "New Wave", that had happened 4 years prior. There was a lot of Depeche Mode, and the Cure there.
My mom liked another kind of music that I was a fan of, that I don't know how to categorize, but she had been raised on the Beatles, and so, by extension, I was as well. In fact, I know a lot more about the Beatles than I probably remember about Math or Science. I make a joke that the first 45 I bought was from Sears, and was "In the Navy" by the Village People. That is true, but the first LP I ever owned was "Parallel Lines" by Blondie. the second was "Look Sharp" by Joe Jackson.
There is a good chance, that as long as the song isn't Country, or Top 40, i know it, and will mostly enjoy it.
I have some gaps, and those are mostly from bands that I don't know a full dicography from, or take a distinct disliking to (Aerosmith).
I just feel kind of old, when I play sometimes when certain songs come on, and people who are only 3-5 years younger than me don't recognize them.
Seriously I thought everyone knew The Who. These guys are the quintessential 4 piece rock band. All the crazy shit other bands do to make themselves "rock stars"... These guys did it first, and better.
Hell the drummer passed out during the middle of a concert, and someone from the audience had to come onstage and finish the set. The guitarist is deaf now, and well, John Entwistle is the definition of the cool basist.
(I just realized when I was looking for this link for the youtube vid, that this concert as '85, and most of the people over yesterday were probably 6-7 when it happened. This is a better song from that concert.)
Actually here is the best performance by any band, ever. Don't argue. Unless you can show me a band who completely seduces a stadium waiting to see Madonna.
Sorry, I went off topic.
One of the other things I have noticed is that everyone is kinda sorta taking "band practice" seriously. One of the dynamics the game developers wanted to foster was the complete band experience. We've already had a couple of band spats. We have one band "Flake".
I love it.
My wishlist for Rock Band:
